Sitecore error: Installation was aborted by user
The other day I made a deployment package with sitecore items for a customer, tested it worked and shipped it of for the customer to install.
The customer returned stating that they were unable to install the package since they got the error “Installation was aborted by user” even though they did not abort it:

I reviewed the log file and found a couple of lines stating pretty much the same.:
INFO Job started: Install
INFO Installing package: C:\inetpub\sitecore\SitecoreData\packages\Deployment.zip
INFO Installation was aborted at entry: items/master/sitecore/templates/Branches/Components/{EDC812F6-C2EF-4111-91A3-3B082A99A71E}/en/1/xml
INFO Installation was aborted
INFO Job ended: Install (units processed: )
Not much help here. So I turned to good old Google and found this article by Sean Holmesby.
It turns out that its something really simple.
The error occurs because the package contains files that needs to overwrite existing files. Sitecore tries to show you a warning in a popup window, but likely your browser does not allow popup windows. Therefore the warning times out and you get this error.
To fix it, simply set your browser to allow popup windows and try again, allowing the installation to overwrite items.
